The Roman soldier wore a short or long sleeved military tunic (Tunica) which was either dark red or off white in colour. The military apron / skirt of decorated leather strips was called a Pteruges.
The body armour was made either of metal or leather pieces and was known as the Lorica segmentata. There would also have been a helmet made of metal, called a Galea.
I have made the tunics of dark red polycotton for the sake of practicality. My armour is made from simulated leather and decorated with bronze buttons and studs. The apron is fastened at the back with Velcro, making it suitable for most waist sizes.
